If you’re anything like us, you’re counting the days until you can pack up the family and get out of town! Traveling with a toddler, especially flying, can be stressful but relax! Air travel with your toddler doesn’t have to be stressful for either of you. We know: They wiggle. They want to run. They cry. And, usually, they don’t get enough sleep. Add the new COVID flight protocols and traveling with a toddler is harder than ever.
First you must know, there are four things required to keep stress at bay on an airplane: realistic expectations, thoughtful planning and packing, serious parenting skills and, most importantly, the right gear! We’ve gathered recommendations from moms all over the world who have tons of experience traveling on a plane with their toddlers. Here are the 50+ best gadgets, devices and products that can help make your plane trip with your toddler easier and more enjoyable for both of you! This extensive list will take you from check in to deplaning – here we go!

Checking In and Getting to the Gate
MOM’S TIP: If both parents are traveling with a minor, across a state line or internationally, they must present: In addition to a passport for the minor, you’ll need an original stamped or sealed birth certificate or a certified copy. If only one parent will be traveling with the child, please check the US Passport Service Guidelines for international travel or visit the TSA.gov website for domestic travel requirements.
We admit, getting through the airport and to the gate can be challenging with a toddler. So many distractions, so little time! Try these practical and fun products to keep your next flight running smoothly and your toddler moving in the right direction: toward the gate.
Regardless of where you might be traveling, if it’s with a toddler, you probably won’t need any item as much as a collapsible stroller. Collapsible strollers can serve as a control device (to keep the little one from dashing off) and as a bed for tired toddlers who just need a power nap. Some families opt for a simple umbrella stroller, but according to our mom panel, a lightweight, travel stroller that reclines a bit can be a lifesaver. Here are a couple of our top choices.

It has over 5,200 five-star reviews on Amazon!
MOM’S TIP: Children’s strollers and child safety seats are not counted as part of the standard baggage allowance and can usually be checked for free on most airlines. These items may be checked at the curbside, the ticket counter, or at the gate. Check your airlines for specific guidelines and rules.

Make a fashion statement, add the matching mask! Travelers Club Kids’ 2-Piece Face Mask Set Plus 4 Air Filters,Cool Dog style
Speaking of masks: Children under the age of two and those with an approved disability, are exempt from the mask requirement. Everyone else (including toddlers over 2 years old) will be required to wear a mask at all times while in the airport terminal, jetways, boarding gate areas and onboard the aircraft for the duration of the flight except while eating, drinking, or taking oral medications for brief periods. Try these top-rated toddler masks to keep your little treasure protected.
MOM’S MASK TIP: As hard as it will be, weeks before your travel date, start teaching your toddler to wear a mask for long periods of time. Try to work up to several hours if you can, especially if you’re going on a long international trip. Two and three-year-olds have little patience for a mask, but you will be required to adhere to aircraft rules (and it’s for the protection of your little one).

Boarding and Settling In
Did you know that the safest place for your child on an airplane is in a government-approved child safety restraint system (i.e. car seat or CARES device), not on your lap? During unexpected turbulence, your arms just aren’t capable of securing your child safely. Therefore, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly urges you to secure your child in a hardback car seat or CARES harness for the duration of your flight. To learn more about the proper ways to secure your toddler, visit “Flying with Children” on the FAA website.
Bear in mind, airlines also have their own rules for traveling with children. Make you’re your read your airline’s information relating to traveling with children before showing up at the airport. Here are a few links to USA domestic/international airlines:
DELTA: Traveling with Children and Infants
AMERICAN: Traveling with Children
UNITED: Traveling with Children
JET BLUE: Traveling with Kids
SOUTHWEST: Traveling with Children
FRONTIER: Traveling with Family and Pets
SPIRIT: Traveling with Children on Spirit Airlines
ALASKA: Traveling with Infants and Children
MOM’S TIP: Boarding an aircraft with a car seat can be cumbersome, especially if you have other small children or are traveling alone. For toddlers, ages 2½ and up, consider checking your car seat and using a CARES device instead. If your toddler is under two, you might want to carry on the car seat because it’s a device they’re familiar with and will sleep in, usually quite easily.

CARES Harness – FAA-Approved, Child Safety Restraint System
$75.99 Over 1,600 Five-star Reviews
Except for using a car seat, the CARES Harness is the only other FAA-approved restraint for use on an airplane. It serves as a seatbelt with shoulder straps for children between 22 and 44 pounds (usually 1½ to 4 years old). It weighs less than one pound, can easily fit in a purse or backpack (even a big pocket) and works in tandem with the airplane seatbelt to keep little ones secured.
MOM’S TIP: Many airlines have at least one CARES harness on board. Contact your airline to find out will have one and if you can reserve it for your toddler.
PRO TIP: Not all seats allow for the use of child safety and booster seats. If you do choose to carry on your child’s car seat, make sure it’s no wider than 16-17.5 inches if you’re traveling in coach. Seat sizes vary according to the carrier, cabin, and type of aircraft. Check with your airline before purchasing a travel car seat, ticket or arriving at the airport.
If you do need to purchase a portable, FAA and vehicle-approved car seat, we have one choice in this department: the top-rated (over 26,900 Five-star reviews on Amazon) Graco Tranzitions 3-in-1 Harness Booster Seat

Graco Tranzitions 3 in 1 Harness Booster Seat, Proof – Assorted Styles & Colors
$129.99 Over 26,900 Five-Star Reviews
We love that this 3-in-1 harness booster grows with your child, helping to protect your child, from toddler to youth. Plus, it’s perfect for air or auto travel! It’s lightweight, portable and has one-hand, 8-position adjustment. The seat pad, body support, and harness covers are comfortable and machine washable.
In our opinion, it’s always better to carry your own car seat when you travel, for two reasons. First, renting a car seat for your child at a car rental agency or in a foreign country can be expensive. And, secondly, you never know how that seat has been treated, cleaned, or used in the past. We recommend protecting your little ones from unnecessary risks by carrying your own car seat when you travel.
PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S CAR SEAT: Whether you purchase a new car seat or already have one to take with you, we recommend protecting it from germs and dirt with a car seat carrier, especially if you intend to check it at the gate.

$21.99 4.7/5 Star Rating
We love this bag! The VolkGo Car Seat Travel Bag is 34″ x 18″ x 18″ in size, which can easily accommodate almost all major brands of infant or toddler car seats. Its double closure system is designed to keep the car seat away from dust, damage and germs.
An Amazon Choice product!
MOM’S TIP: Get to the gate early and ask the agent if there is an empty seat next to you or nearby. Or if there is any way you can be moved next to an empty seat on the plane. 99% of the time they will accommodate your request, if the plane is not full. More space = less stress!

Plus, the handle is rubberized, to make carrying it around just that little bit easier. Size: 34x18x18 inches, compatible with most car seats. We love the 1 year, “No Questions Asked” Warranty!
If you’re going to carry your toddler’s car seat on board with you, this car seat travel belt will help you get to the gate without needing a back adjustment!

$13.95 – Over 1,400 Five-Star Reviews
While not a bag, the device is equally life-saving. It turns your rolling carryon bag (or roller bags 13” to 56”) into an ultra-portable travel solution that works for all car seats that have a top tether. Be sure to practice at home so you’ll look like a PRO at the airport! You can even attach your car seat to most umbrella strollers with this travel belt!
MOM’S TIP: Before boarding, let your toddler burn off some energy at the gate. Sitting in an airplane seat for an extended period of time is against a toddler’s nature. 😉 Also, talk to them about the airplane and what they can expect when they board. They’ll be better prepared for all the rules once on board. 😉😉
Settling in for Takeoff
Most airlines allow passengers traveling with small children to board first so that they can get settled before the other passengers board. Carefully consider if you need that extra time. Some toddlers can get restless waiting for the remaining passengers to board; others will enjoy the time to get familiar with their new surroundings.
First thing: wipe down tray tables, windows, seatbelts, and seat armrests as soon as you board. It’s OK to be a germaphobe during the flight. Even before the pandemic, airplanes were notorious for being a petri dish of icky bacteria.
Then, once you have the little one secured in his/her seat, it’s time for you to get organized for the flight! Trust us: organization is critical for any flight with a toddler, especially long flights. Pack and prepare, before leaving home, so nothing will be forgotten. These organizational products will come in handy throughout your trip!

WALTER + RAY Onboarder Seatback Organizer and Travel Bag
$49.95
Great quality, very versatile! If you want things within reach after takeoff, this seatback organizer and travel bag is perfect. It fits inside or outside the seatback pocket or hangs from the tray table. It even has a shielded RFID protection pocket for sensitive data and documents. The best feature about this product is that it’s versatile enough to use anytime during your trip – even on day trips and in the car!
MOM’S TIP: The HEPA air-filtration system on a plane is very good and health officials recommend turning on the air vent as soon as you board. This will keep a curtain of filtered air moving down over you and your children and could reduce the possibility of in-flight transmission of germs and viral loads.

$14.88 – $29.88 – 11,700+ Five-Star Reviews

The bottom zippered shoe compartment is perfect for extra diapers and clothes changes. Use it on board the aircraft or on daytrips! Or, try this one without the shoes compartment in the bottom and more space in the main compartment, still fitting under the seat in front of you. Comes in a variety of designs.

This versatile bag fits perfectly under the seat and comes with a 90-day exchange or refund warranty.
Take Off and Landing
Ear pressure is one of the most painful, frightening things to a small child. Take care of your toddler’s ears (and yours too!) using mom-tested ear plugs, especially designed for little ears.
Typically, the air pressure inside the middle ear and outside are equal. This isn’t the case when there is a sudden shift in air pressure. When air pressure changes rapidly, like during takeoff and landing on a flight, strain is placed on the eardrum. This can cause ear discomfort and that “popping” sensation. For children, especially small children, this can be extremely painful. For adults, it can be equally painful and possibly trigger a migraine or headache.
Experienced parents trust Original Children’s EarPlanes® by Cirrus Healthcare during takeoff and landing to reduce that pressure and pain.

Original Children’s EarPlanes® 3 Pk
$17.95
Doctor recommended, and backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, EarPlanes® is the world’s #1 seller for preventing ear pain inflight with over 1,000 Five-Star reviews! They are specifically designed to slow the shift of air pressure that enters the ear, reducing stress on the eardrum, and overall ear discomfort.
💥💥 Note: Statements regarding effectiveness of this product have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition. Please talk to your child’s doctor before using any product. 💥💥
MOM TIP: With young children and babies, we recommend using gentle-stick medical tape to cover their ears as they will try to pull the earplugs out during the flight. Make sure to put the tape on your clothes first (to reduce the stickiness of the tape), then take it off and put it gently over their ears. It makes taking the tape off after the flight less traumatic, too.

Children’s size will also fit adults with small ears. But if you need a larger size, try New Super Soft Adult EarPlanes® Ear Plugs Airplane Travel Ear Protection (3 Pairs) $17.95 – 4.7/5 Stars Rating
Sleeping on the Plane
It’s great to score a row of middle seats all to yourself so your child can stretch out and sleep. But sometimes that’s not possible. The next best thing when your toddler gets sleepy is to have an inflatable kid’s bed designed especially for the plane.
In addition to the JetKids BedBox that can be transformed to serve as a bed space, here are a few super suggestions to help your toddler get comfy and cozy on the plane.

Inflatable Toddler’s Airplane Bed
$18.95/$33.99 (1 or 2 device pack)
This super easy, super affordable product basically fills in the gap between two seats, while adjusting to the height of the seat and extending the length of the seat. That extra surface is excellent for toddlers, as it allows them to lay down flat or lift their leg up for better sleep or be a platform for them to play with toys and relax.
It’s portable, lightweight, and has over 1,700 five-star reviews on Amazon. It can be used on the plane, train or in a car. You’ll definitely get your money’s worth with this product! NOTE: Always check with your airline before carrying on any inflatable device!

Block out harmful, disruptive noises with the best noise cancelling earmuffs designed for infants and toddlers. Protects your little one’s ears and helps them sleep without interruption. NOTE: These are not audio headphones.
Keep Them Busy with Activities
As any parent knows, once the toddler is in his seat, it’s our job is to keep him there for the duration of the flight. So, let’s talk about how to keep those little ones in their seats during the flight. The keyword is distraction and the secret to distraction is variety.
MOM’S TIP: Pack plenty of new activities (and compact activities without too many pieces) that will hold the child’s attention. If it’s something your child has been playing with at home, it might not hold their attention very long. But if it’s something new … well, you know!
💥 MOM’S SUPER TIP: Wrap everything in wrapping paper to look like a gift. And give a “gift” to reward good behavior! Consider having one activity gift for every hour in- flight. Any leftovers can be used on the way home!
Before we list our recommended flight activities, let us just say that the #1 activity voted hands down by traveling moms is Amazon’s Fire HD 10 Kids Tablet. Our moms are all for limiting screen time, under normal circumstances, but during a flight, we recommend extending or disregarding limits altogether until you reach your destination.

Any parent with a toddler probably has one of these already! Durable, easy to use, and full of the educational and fun content that kids crave, the Amazon Fire HD 10.1 Kids Tablet is a great travel companion. Add Amazon Kids+ all-in-one subscription and have access to over 20,000 books, TV shows, songs, apps, games etc. It also has a camera so they can take pictures on the plane!
MOM’S TIP: One week before traveling, download copies of your child’s favorite TV shows and movies for when you don’t have access to WIFI. Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ allow subscribers to download movies and there are many entertaining and educational kid’s apps that will help time hold their attention too.
If you do carry a tablet, please invest in a comfortable, age-appropriate, volume-limited headset for your child. Nothing bothers other passengers more than overhearing someone else’s movie or game sounds. Not only will your neighbors thank you, but the headset will allow your toddler to focus without being distracted by other noises on the plane. Here are some of our choices:

Snuggly Rascals (v2) Kids Headphones
$15.49-$19.99 (depending on design)
Snuggly Rascals over ear children’s headphones are made of fleece and are size adjustable with Velcro for the perfect fit. They are super-comfy, won’t fall off and they’re not easy to break. This style is suitable for children age 3+, however we are aware customers have children of younger ages using them under supervision.
Why do our moms love them? The Snuggly Rascals volume-limiting headband headphones are perfect for all kids including children with autism and sensory differences. Plus, they come with a 2-year guarantee!

Paw Patrol Kids Headphones by CozyPhones $19.99 – Choose from Marshall or Skye
If your child loves Paw Patrol, they’ll love these soft, highly rated wrap headphones. Almost 1,500 Five-Star reviews and an Amazon Choice product!

LilGadgets Connect+ Style Kids Volume-limited, Wired Headphones
$24.95 – 4.6 / 5 Star-Rating on Amazon
These wired, kid-sized headphone are an Amazon Choice product and have a 4.6 five-star rating. Designed with comfort (padded ear pieces and volume limited) and function (lightweight, durable, and a 4 ft. audio cable) in mind, they are recommended for ages 2-8 years old. They come with a microfiber carrying pouch.
MOM’S TIP: Wired kids’ headphones (tend to travel better than wireless for two reasons: (1) they can be connected to most airlines entertainment systems, with an adapter, further expanding your child’s entertainment options and (2) sooner or later, wireless headphones need to be charged, which could be a tedious task while traveling.
If you are looking for a wireless solution, an excellent choice is the iClever Bluetooth BTH12 model, foldable and boasts 40 hours of playtime battery.

$36.99 plus a $10.00 off coupon at checkout, limited time
Great audio, four colorful LED lighting modes and a foldable design. These headphones have great battery life, up to 40 hours of playtime, and charges with a USB-C cord for fast charging. The design is made for kids, including cushioned earpads, adjustable headband and can withstand kid-treatment! They come with a generous warranty, too.
When traveling with a toddler, it’s important to bring along enough activities to switch out if you see the child is getting bored. You also need to make sure the activity isn’t too bulky or has pieces that will fall on the floor. Here’s our list of mom-approved, toddler-tested, activities that have kept toddlers happy, busy, and in their seat during the flight:

Keeping your toddler fed during your travels is a very important part of keeping your toddler happy! It’s so important that we’re going to dedicate an entire blog post on this subject, giving you some great tips and hacks. We’ll be posting that soon, so stay tuned! 😉
Before you pack up all this amazing gear, you need to remember that traveling with a toddler, on a plane, especially a long-haul trip, isn’t for the faint-hearted. Be prepared to entertain and care for your toddler the entire trip. Hopefully, he or she will sleep, but if you set your expectations at “no sleep”, things can only get better! Setting the correct expectations before leaving home will also reduce unnecessary stress during your trip. Another tip is to travel with a partner. Sharing “toddler” duty and having a little “off” time can reduce stress as well.
Above all, family vacations are such a joy and getting there is only a small part of the journey. If you’ve planned your trip well, have the right gear to make it easier on you and your toddler, and have set correct expectations, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how smooth your trip will be!
Happy, fun, and safe travels!
