Want to give your front door a facelift? Here’s how to give it an updated look in six easy steps.
Front doors require a minimal amount of maintenance but a fresh coat of paint will make you feel like you’re coming home to a brand new house!

Step 1 – Choose your new paint color!
This step might sound much more straightforward than it is, but we recommend taping your paint swatches to the exterior of your door, as the lighting can vary drastically between the inside and outside of a home. Step 2 – Prep the door.
Remove all the hardware and locks from your door. A palm sander works great to rough up the old painted surface, helping give the primer better adherence. Don’t forget to wipe the door down to eliminate any dust!
Step 3 – Time for the primer.
Apply the primer evenly over the entire door. After the primer coat has dried, gently run sandpaper over any inconsistencies. Wipe off any sand dust with a rag.
Step 4 – Edges and details.
Begin by painting the trim details and insets by hand for the best results. This step will help you lay an even base coat.
Step 5 – Paint flat surfaces.
A small 6″ roller works best to ensure consistent paint application. Be sure to correct any inconsistencies in the paint and use a hand brush to touch up if needed.
Step 6 – Reattach all door hardware.
Once the paint has dried, it’s time to get it back on the hinges! Reattach all hardware. Were you considering new locks and knobs for your door as well? Now is the best time to make that change. Doing so will give your front door an even fresher look!
